Key findings include:
- Smokers are three times more likely to develop all forms of Age-related macular degeneration
- Smoking can lead to AMD developing 10 years earlier, on average
- Oxidative stress is caused by smoking, amongst other factors
- 82% of non-smokers suffer from eye irritation as a result of passive smoking
- 49% of people in the UK haven’t heard of AMD
- Only 1 in 3 optometrists advise their patients about quitting smoking
- Only 15% of smokers have concerns about eye health
