Why MPS II makes a cost-effective choice for eyecare professionals

MPS II is a screening device which helps eyecare professionals spot the signs of age-related macular degeneration in their patients.

There are immediate benefits in installing the device in the practice, both for the patient and for the clinicians themselves.

Fast, reliable and affordable screening

Having an MPS II in your practice adds value to the patient, who can have a completely non-invasive test with no need for the discomfort of dilating the pupil. It could also save them the pain of injections into the eye if the disease were to develop.

They can see the results there and then, and get easy-to-follow advice about changes to their lifestyle and diet which they can make straight away which will help delay the onset of the disease.

It’s a cost-effective choice. If the MPS II costs around £6000 and patients pay £20 for the test, after just 300 appointments the device will have paid for itself. And you’ll be providing a quality service to your patients which is quick, affordable and saves them from having to travel to a specialist eye hospital for a separate appointment.

Repeat supplementation to help delay AMD

Along with improving diet and stopping smoking, a key factor in delaying and even preventing the onset of AMD is lutein supplements, as shown in a study by Dr Ian Murray which is soon to be published.

He took 40 patients with dry AMD, giving half the group a placebo and the other half lutein. At the end of a 12-month period the patients who had taken lutein showed a statistically significant increase in macular pigment optical density (MPOD).

As well as the convenience of having the screening test for AMD at the clinic, patients can also obtain their supplements from you. It can be as simple as signing up for contact lens solutions, with patients coming back to pay for their repeat prescriptions at regular intervals.
