Repeat supplementation to help delay AMD
Along with improving diet and stopping smoking, a key factor in delaying and even preventing the onset of AMD is lutein supplements, as shown in a study by Dr Ian Murray which is soon to be published.
He took 40 patients with dry AMD, giving half the group a placebo and the other half lutein. At the end of a 12-month period the patients who had taken lutein showed a statistically significant increase in macular pigment optical density (MPOD).
As well as the convenience of having the screening test for AMD at the clinic, patients can also obtain their supplements from you. It can be as simple as signing up for contact lens solutions, with patients coming back to pay for their repeat prescriptions at regular intervals.
